Tomorrow (Saturday April 24th) is the Kids' Comic Con at the Bronx Community College in NY. It is free to anyone 17 or younger (over-17s, it's only $5 for you to get in). Look for the flyers around campus to lead you to the event!

The Comics Bakery won't have a booth or be selling any books, but Raina and Dave will be doing a drawing workshop...

2:00 PM – 2:45 PM: Youth Workshop D – Creating Comic Characters and Art With Style.
Dave Roman (Nickelodeon Magazine) and Raina Telgemeier (Baby-sitters Club) lead a drawing workshop that focuses on how the comics we grow up reading can affect how each of us draws. They'll help young artists break down drawings into basic shapes and use them to create fun new characters!

And Raina is doing another panel earlier in the day...

Professional Workshop – Careers In Comics!
NOTE: It starts at either noon, or 1:00...Check local listings!
Join professional writers, illustrators, editors, and designers as they share how they got started in their careers and how their jobs have changed over time. They’ll also offer tips for young people interested in breaking into comics. There will be plenty of time for Q&A with the audience. (Panelists: Colleen Venable (designer, First Second Books; and self-published artist); Raina Telgemeier (artist, The Baby-sitters Club graphic novels, and co-author of Del Rey's X-Men: Misfits and online comic SMILE); Peter Gutierrez (writer and educator specializing in media literacy); Jonathan Bresman (senior editor, Mad Magazine). Moderated by Janna Morishima (director, Diamond Kids Group)

Con Update [Sep. 24th, 2008|12:22 pm]

[Current Music |Information Society: I Love It When ...]

In an effort to cut down on the amount of con-stress for the next few months, Comics Bakery won’t be at the NY Anime Fest or NY Comic Con. The main reason: doing stuff at the Javitts Center ends up being way more exhausting than traveling out of state! It’s a lot easier on the soul when there’s a hotel to crash in rather than having to walk across the west side of Manhattan and ride the subway home with suitcases, boxes, and booth displays!

BUT:

Comic Bakery WILL be exhibiting at the Small Press Expo in Bethesda, MD, October 4th and 5th because it’s one of our favorite long running shows and it’s in a comfy hotel! Hope to see you there!

The Comics Bakery team will, once again, be setting up shop at the Small Press Expo, happening October 4 and 5 in Bethesda, MD! SPX is one of our favorite shows. We'll have lots of great stuff for sale. I'm debuting my new Baby-sitters Club Graphic Novel, Claudia and Mean Janine at the show, which is really exciting! We'll post another update closer to the show with our table information and more about what we'll have for sale!

We hope to see you there.

Picture This! [Sep. 3rd, 2008|01:23 pm]

Dave and I are going to be in Oakdale, NY on Thursday, September 4 for Picture This: Using Images to Illuminate YA Literature. It's an all-day symposium about graphic novels for librarians. The librarians of Suffolk County positively LOVE comics, so we're really excited to be going!

Our panel is called "Collaboration: Two Visions, One Goal!" and it starts at 1:15 PM. You need to pre-register for the event. It should be a lot of fun!
